Handle Materials Guide
Handle Materials Guide
The handle of a knife is just as important as the blade. It determines comfort, grip, durability, and the overall aesthetic of the piece. At Wild Hunt Steel, we offer a wide range of handle materials to suit every preference, from natural woods to exotic resins and traditional bone.
Natural Wood Handles
Rosewood
Rosewood is one of the most popular handle materials in our collection. It is dense, durable, and features a rich reddish-brown grain that deepens in color over time. Rosewood handles are comfortable to hold and develop a beautiful natural sheen with use.
Walnut
Walnut is prized for its straight, even grain and warm chocolate-brown color. It is strong, stable, and provides an excellent grip. Our Timeless Walnut Damascus Collectible and Forestflare Kitchen Tool both feature walnut handles.
Wenge Wood
Wenge is a dark, almost black hardwood with a striking straight grain. It is extremely dense and durable, making it an excellent choice for professional kitchen knives. Featured in our Ember Forge 5-Piece Damascus Chef Knife Set.
Ash Wood
Ash is a light-colored hardwood with excellent shock resistance, making it ideal for axe handles. Our Viking axe collection features ash wood handles for their strength and traditional authenticity.
Dyed and Stabilized Wood
We offer a range of dyed wood handles in blue, orange, green, and black. Stabilized wood is infused with resin under pressure, making it more resistant to moisture and more vibrant in color than natural wood.
Resin Handles
Standard Resin
Resin handles are cast from colored or patterned resin, offering virtually unlimited color options. They are moisture-resistant, durable, and do not require the same level of maintenance as natural wood. Available in ruby red, sky blue, light blue, honey, white, black, orange, green, and mixed patterns.
Mother of Pearl Resin
Mother of pearl resin captures the iridescent shimmer of natural pearl in a durable, cast form. Featured in our Aurora Pearl and Raindrop Pearl collectibles, it creates a stunning visual effect that catches the light beautifully.
Stone Resin
Stone pattern resin mimics the appearance of natural stone in a lightweight, durable handle. Featured in our Embercrest Damascus Mini Collector's Tool.
Bone and Natural Material Handles
Dyed Bone
Bone handles are traditional, durable, and develop a beautiful character over time. We offer dyed bone in orange, blue, caramel, and natural finishes. Bone provides a natural, slightly textured grip that is comfortable in the hand.
Stag Antler
Stag antler is a premium natural handle material prized for its unique texture, natural grip, and traditional hunting knife aesthetic. No two stag antler handles are identical. Featured in our Stagcrest Damascus Mini and Glacier Hollow Ulu Knife.
Ram Horn
Ram horn handles offer a distinctive dark, layered appearance with natural variation in color and pattern. Featured in our Starlight Voyager Damascus Collectible.
Micarta Handles
Micarta is a composite material made from layers of linen, canvas, or paper impregnated with resin. It is extremely durable, moisture-resistant, and provides an excellent grip even in wet conditions. Available in dark micarta and sky blue micarta in our collection.
Choosing the Right Handle Material
For kitchen use, rosewood, walnut, wenge, and resin handles are excellent choices due to their moisture resistance and durability. For outdoor and hunting use, stag antler, micarta, and stabilized wood provide superior grip in wet conditions. For collectible and display pieces, mother of pearl resin, bone, and ram horn offer the most visual impact.
