Steel Types Comparison Guide
Choosing the right steel for your knife is one of the most important decisions you will make. At Wild Hunt Steel, we work with several premium steel types, each with its own unique characteristics.
Damascus Steel
Damascus steel is created by forge-welding multiple layers of different steel alloys together. Our Damascus blades achieve 58 to 62 HRC hardness. Best for chef knives, collectibles, and fillet knives where both performance and aesthetics matter. Requires regular oiling to prevent patina.
1095 High Carbon Steel
1095 is a simple high-carbon steel with approximately 0.95% carbon content. Heat-treated to 57 to 60 HRC in our blades. Best for cleavers, hunting knives, and heavy-duty kitchen use. Requires regular oiling and immediate drying after use.
D2 Steel
D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel with excellent wear resistance. Hardened to 60 to 62 HRC. Best for hunting knives and everyday carry where wear resistance is the top priority. Semi-stainless properties make it more rust-resistant than pure carbon steel.
J2 Steel
J2 steel is a stainless steel alloy offering good corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. Used in our skinner blades and heritage tool series. Requires minimal maintenance.
Railroad Spike Carbon Steel
Forged from actual railroad spikes made from medium-carbon steel. Each blade has a unique character and a connection to industrial history. Popular as collector pieces and gifts. Requires regular oiling like other carbon steels.
Stainless Steel
Contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium for excellent corrosion resistance. Used in our replica swords and decorative pieces. Requires minimal maintenance.
