Ulu Knives Guide
Ulu Knives Guide
The ulu knife is one of the oldest and most versatile cutting tools in history, originating from the indigenous peoples of the Arctic. Wild Hunt Steel brings this ancient design into the modern kitchen with hand-forged Damascus ulu knives of exceptional quality and beauty.
What Is an Ulu Knife
An ulu is a fan-shaped or semicircular knife with the handle mounted above the blade rather than at the end. This unique design allows the user to apply downward pressure directly over the cutting edge, making it exceptionally efficient for rocking, chopping, and mincing tasks. The ulu is traditionally used for everything from food preparation to hide processing.
Our Damascus Ulu Collection
All of our ulu knives are crafted from 300-layer Damascus steel, providing exceptional sharpness, strength, and a stunning visual pattern. Each knife features a 5.8 to 6-inch blade and a carefully selected handle for comfort and control.

Sets are available as the Northern Forge Culinary Set and the Glacier Hollow Culinary Set.
Uses for an Ulu Knife
The ulu knife excels at mincing herbs and garlic, chopping vegetables, slicing pizza, rocking through nuts and dried fruit, and portioning meat. Its ergonomic design reduces wrist strain during repetitive chopping tasks.
Caring for Your Ulu Knife
Hand wash your ulu knife with warm soapy water and dry immediately after use. Apply mineral oil to the blade periodically. For wooden chopping bowls, condition with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent drying and cracking. Visit our Blade Care and Maintenance Guide for full details.
